The victim of Vancouver’s first homicide of 2014 has been identified as 28-year-old Robert Tyson Smith of Surrey.
Shortly after 11:00 on February 9th, a taxi driver at Granville and Georgia got into an argument with two men. A passenger got out of the cab and joined in the dispute. The argument quickly escalated into a fight between the two men and the passenger, and ended with the passenger being stabbed.
When police arrived, they found the victim unconscious on the sidewalk suffering from a life-threatening stab wound. He was rushed to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Acting on information received from witnesses, police arrested two men who are believed to have been involved in the incident.
Both men have been released, pending further investigation, and charges have not yet been laid in the case.
“We believe that there are other witnesses out there who have not yet spoken to police,” says VPD spokesperson Sergeant Randy Fincham. “These witnesses may hold important information that is vital to the ongoing police investigation.”
