The VPD’s Traffic Section is joining forces with the Dunbar PAC committee, the Vancouver School Board and ICBC to educate drivers and pedestrians about safety in school zones.
Starting today, the Dunbar Parent Advisory Committee will be working alongside VPD traffic officers, school officials and ICBC employees to improve road safety around the schools. The committee, which is made up of volunteer parents from seven schools in the Dunbar area, will be handing out reflectors and driver education cards to motorists and pedestrians travelling through the neighbourhood.
“With the support of Southlands parents, teachers and students, we are committed to making the roads around our school safer for our children,” says Cheryl Roehlig, Chair of the Southlands Traffic Management Committee.
“This is a great example of parents, teachers, school administrators and police coming together to make school zones a safer place for kids,” says Acting Inspector Ken Eng of the VPD Traffic Enforcement Unit.
“We’re asking drivers to do their part to share our roads safely and watch out for pedestrians especially when turning in intersections,” said Joanne Bergman, local ICBC road safety coordinator. “As a pedestrian, you need to make eye contact with drivers and wear reflective clothing or gear to make it easier for drivers to see you in fall and winter.”
