One man has been arrested after officers discovered he was in possession of a number of concerning items, including two grenades.

Shortly after 7:00 last night, police received a 9-1-1 call about a suspicious person near Fraser Street and King Edward Avenue. Officers arrived and found the man in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked beside the convenience store at the Esso gas station.

Officers spoke with the 33-year-old man and found he was in possession of a small amount of marijuana. Further investigation revealed he was a prohibited driver, and police seized a set of brass knuckles from his pocket.

Upon a search of the truck, officers located throwing knives, a tactical vest, and two hand grenades.

Members from the Vancouver Police Explosive Disposal Unit analyzed the devices in the back of the truck with the use of a mobile robot. The grenades were x-rayed and police determined they were active explosive devices. They were taken to a nearby field where they were safely disposed of by way of a controlled detonation.

Multiple charges will be requested against the 33-year-old man from Surrey who remains in custody.
