East Vancouver residents had to keep an eye on their pic-a-nic baskets this morning, after a young bear was spotted in their neighbourhood.

Shortly after 6 a.m., the young bear meandered into the area of Renfrew and East Hastings Street. After spotting one of our officers, a close likeness to Ranger Smith, the young bear concealed itself in a tree in the 2900 block of East Pender Street.

Conservation officers were called in and tranquilized the bear, which will now be safely relocated outside of the city. Jellystone Park has not been ruled out.
