This morning, the Vancouver Police Department and Project 529 will be partnering to launch Vancouver’s 2017 Bike-to-Work Week.

Road safety is a shared responsibility, and the VPD remains committed to improving road safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. The focus of our officers during Bike to Work Week will be education. We will be engaging the public over the next week to encourage everyone to follow the rules of the road.

Unfortunately, bike theft continues in our city. Every year in Vancouver, over 2,000 bicycles are reported stolen. Many of those owners were unable to provide police with serial numbers or other identifying descriptions that would have linked them to their bikes. Roughly, only 15 per cent of bikes recovered in 2016 were reunited with their owners.

Help us combat property crime by participating in the 529 Garage registration and recovery program. It’s free to register and it will greatly improve the chances of getting your bike back should it be stolen.

Since the launch of the 529 Garage in BC in October of 2015, over 20,000 bikes have been registered in Vancouver. In 2016, 250 of the registered bikes that were stolen were recovered and returned to their owners.

The public is encouraged to drop by VPD headquarters at 2120 Cambie Street and register their bikes with Project 529 volunteers.
