A Good Samaritan disarmed a knife-wielding attacker following a disagreement over a bocce ball game in Victoria Park earlier this evening.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., a man was playing bocce ball in a park in the 1400 block of Victoria Drive when he was attacked by a stranger who was armed with a knife. A passerby who witnessed the altercation came to the ball player’s aid, disarming the man with the knife.

When police arrived, they found the suspect in the park, holding a second knife. He refused to follow directions from the police and was taken into custody through the use of a police K-9 unit.

The suspect, a 45 year old Vancouver man, was arrested for attempted murder and possession of a dangerous weapon.

The victim, a 50 year old man from Vancouver, suffered non life-threatening slash wounds to his head and hand, was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to the hospital.

“If not for the actions of this Good Samaritan, the victim could easily have suffered injuries beyond the slash wounds,” says VPD spokesperson Randy Fincham.
