Update

Vancouver Police are recommending criminal charges as well as looking for witnesses and other potential victims of a violent and bizarre incident last night.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., police received calls to 9-1-1 about an assault occurring near Canada Place and Burrard Street. Those reports indicated that a woman was allegedly attacking pedestrians in the area and attempted to throw a 31-year-old woman off the pier and into the water below.

Witnesses provided a description and the woman’s direction of travel to police. Officers at the scene located belongings she had left behind, and a search of the area located the woman about 10 minutes later near Harbour Green Park.

The suspect was initially brought to hospital after being taken into custody. While there, she kicked an 88-year-old woman lying on a nearby stretcher in the head. The woman was not seriously injured.

The suspect was taken to jail, but was later transported back to hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries. She remains in custody.

Police will be recommending several charges against the 20-year-old woman, who is new to Vancouver, but has had extensive and violent police contact in other provinces.

Police are looking to identify additional witnesses and potentially other victims who left the area prior to the arrival of police.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the VPD Major Crime Section at 604-717-2541.
