Collision investigators with the VPD are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to a fatal collision on the Burrard Bridge just before 1 a.m. today.

An Audi R8 sports car was travelling north on the bridge when the driver lost control, crossed over the centre line, and collided with a southbound taxi. Investigators believe that speed was a factor in this crash.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and the collision caused at least one of the vehicles to burst into flames. The lone occupant of the Audi died at the scene, while the 68-year-old taxi driver and his passenger, in his 30s, were taken to hospital where they remain in serious condition. Both are Vancouver residents.

First responders are praising a driver who stopped to help right after the collision happened.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call the VPD at 604-717-3012. This is Vancouver’s 11th fatal collision of 2017.

The bridge reopened to traffic just after 1:00 this afternoon.
